Spotlight on a Woman Who Codes

In 2009, Miral Kotb founded iLuminate, a dance group that uses wireless lighting programs to create explosive and colorful performances, and she serves as its CEO today. Since iLuminate’s debut on America’s Got Talent in 2011, the group has traveled around the world. They have performed with The Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, starred in an Off-Broadway show and The X Factor.
In this video, learn more about Miral's discovery of combining dance and code and how she brings together her passions with iLuminate!

Spotlight on a Woman Who Codes

Imagine what you could do if you could invent anything in the world. Where would you start? Who would you talk with? Haiyan Zhang asks herself similar questions each day. As a result, she creates innovative technology!  Haiyan currently serves as the Innovation Director at Microsoft Research. She co-founded OpenIDEO and appeared on BBC’s invention series Big Life Fix.

After researching Parkinson’s disease, Haiyan invented a tremor-reducing watch called ‘Project Emma to help people with Parkinson’s write and draw. She drew inspiration from her conversations with people with Parkinson’s and her previous experiences creating biomedical applications.

  3. Click on this Gun Stats Starter Code.
  4. Click in Remix to create your own copy of the starter code.
  5. Click on Rename to rename the project to [Your name] World Hunger Project Statistic (for example, mine would be Heidi World Hunger Project Statistic
  6. Follow the instructions in the comment blocks of the code to replace the content with your own statistic, image, and url.  You will also change font sizes and adjust the design elements so it looks good.

Spotlight on a Woman Who Codes

Do you think coding and computer science can be creative or artistic? Today's GWC Tech Spotlight got into coding because it has allowed her to combine her love of fashion and art with her interest in science and math. Fran Kalal is a Technical Director at Pixar and has worked on films like Inside Out, Brave, and Up!

What Do You Want to Do with Your Project?

Some typical things to do include:

  • Urge people to take action by contributing money.
  • Urge people to take action by contributing food.
  • Urge people to take action by volunteering.
  • Urge people to take action by signing petitions.
  • Urge people to take action by contacting their congressman/woman.
  • Make people more aware of hunger and food insecurity.
  • Show people where the need is greatest.

Jasmine Crowe is an award-winning entrepreneur, TED Speaker, children’s book author, and leader who, while working to make the world a better place, founded Goodr, a tech-enabled sustainable food waste management company that strives to eliminate hunger and save food from landfills. Jasmine’s goal is to foster change and create awareness about today’s most pressing socio-economic challenges including poverty, food waste and hunger.

Spotlight on a Woman Who Codes

Discover how Momo Pixel is Changing the Game by using her style, passion and Pixel Art game, Hair Nah, to inspire more equity in the gaming industry.

Momo Pixel is an artist, a gamer and a developer who channeled her anxiety into a game. She was tired of saying “Don’t Touch My Hair” to curious people who seemingly couldn’t help themselves, and that led to a creation that’s inspiring girls who code. The Google Play Change the Game initiative continues to honor female developers changing the world with their ideas.

Find Your Focus

  1. Part 1: Brainstorm

    • Generate as many ideas for our theme as possible in 2 minutes. 

    • Using 2 sticky notes, write down your favorite two themes.

    • Put all the sticky notes up on the wall.

    • Take 2 minutes to review the ideas.

    • Group similar ideas together. 

  2. Part 2: Pick our Theme

    • Take 2-3 minutes to walk around and draw a dot on your favorite 3 ideas. 

    • Identify the top 3 ideas. 

    • Take 1-2 minutes to vote for your favorite idea of the remaining 3 options.

  3. Part 3: Next Steps

    • We can consider how to use this theme in our project!
